Batumi as a place to live, not just to visit
Many buyers first see Batumi on holiday and then wonder whether they could live there. The city has changed fast: the 2024 census counted 235,668 residents, 54.2% more than in 2014, the fastest growth of any municipality in Georgia. Behind the towers and the boulevard there is an ordinary city with schools, a university, markets, theatres, buses and a port, and a growing number of people who stay all year.
This guide covers what daily life costs and how it works: incomes and prices, utilities, internet, transport, banking and paperwork, culture, safety and air quality. Winter weather, heating tariffs and what closes off season are covered in our guide to winter in Batumi; schools, kindergartens and healthcare in our guide to Batumi for families.
Local incomes and prices
Batumi is cheaper than Tbilisi for most things, but local wages are lower too. According to the national statistics office, average monthly gross earnings in Adjara were GEL 1,889.4 in the first quarter of 2026, against GEL 2,363.8 for Georgia as a whole and GEL 2,779.6 in Tbilisi; by our calculation Adjara earns about 80% of the national average. Annual inflation in Georgia was 5.6% in August 2026, with core inflation at 3.8%.
For a sense of everyday prices, the crowd-sourced site Numbeo, updated on 26 October 2026 from 112 contributors, gives the figures below. They are averages reported by users, not official statistics, so treat them as a rough guide.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Monthly costs for one person, excluding rent | about GEL 1,566 |
| Monthly costs for a family of four, excluding rent | about GEL 5,796 |
| Meal at an inexpensive restaurant | GEL 30 |
| Dinner for two, mid-range restaurant | GEL 84 |
| Milk, 1 litre | GEL 5.50 |
| Monthly gym membership | about GEL 149 |
The comparison tells its own story: the estimated monthly cost for one person, excluding rent, is above the average net wage in Adjara. Batumi is affordable on a foreign income, but tight on a local one. For fresh food, a local guide recommends the central market near the old bus station and the fish market near the port, where neighbouring cafes will cook your catch; prices there are usually lower than in tourist spots.
Utilities, internet and phone
Running a flat in Batumi is cheap by European standards. Water is supplied by Batumi Water, and the energy regulator's household tariff for 2024 to 2026 is GEL 0.518 per cubic metre with a meter, including VAT, or GEL 2.626 per person a month without one. As our own example, a couple using 6 m³ a month on a meter pays about GEL 3. Electricity is billed in three tiers, set out in our winter guide; gas tariffs are fixed by the regulator until 1 January 2028.
- Home internet: a local guide lists about GEL 35 to 50 a month for 45 to 80 Mbps from the two main providers, Silknet and Magti; check the operator's site for current offers.
- Mobile: the operators are Magti, Silknet and Cellfie, and mobile data costs under USD 15 a month, according to the same guide.
- Waste fee: a 2024 press summary put it at GEL 1.30 per person a month; we could not confirm the current amount.
Our guide to the cost of owning an apartment adds the building fees and taxes that come on top.
Getting around all year
City buses are run by the municipal company Batumi Autotransport. Since a city council resolution of 30 January 2026, a trip costs GEL 0.70 with the transport card; municipal buses take no cash, a contactless bank card costs about GEL 1 more per ride, and minibuses still accept cash. Buses 10 and 10a run to the airport and 16 to the Sarpi border. Buses are fewer in the evening, when taxi apps are easier.
A local guide puts a taxi ride within the city at about GEL 5 to 10 and the trip from the airport at about GEL 15 to 20, and recommends apps that show the fare upfront. Cyclists can use the 6 km bicycle path along the boulevard, rebuilt by the boulevard administration, and 3.8 km of bus and bicycle lanes created in the centre in 2020 with UNDP support. The BatumVelo bike-share card has been sold for GEL 20 including GEL 10 of credit, with an hour costing GEL 2, though that price may be old.
Residence, banking and paperwork
Many nationalities may remain in Georgia visa-free for as long as a year, while longer stays call for a residence permit, which can be based on owning property. Our guide to the residence permit through property explains the thresholds and documents. Applications are handled at the Public Service Hall, Batumi's "House of Justice", a round seafront tower on Sherif Khimshiashvili Avenue.
Foreigners can open accounts at Georgian banks with a passport, though banks run their own checks and can refuse; our guide to the best bank for foreigners compares them. Nationally, the 2024 census counted 133,857 foreign citizens living permanently in Georgia, led by Russians, Indians and Ukrainians; we found no breakdown for Batumi.
The foreign community
Batumi has long had foreign residents, and their numbers grew after 2022. Nationally, the government reported 107,307 residence permits held by citizens of 164 countries in early 2026, led by Russia with 32,129, India with 23,930, many of them students, and Ukraine with 6,290, alongside about 25,000 Ukrainians with refugee status. We found no breakdown for Adjara or Batumi. Georgian remains the language of official business, so plan for certified translations of your documents when you apply for permits or register property.
Culture, study and sport
Batumi's cultural life does not stop at the end of summer. The Ilia Chavchavadze State Drama Theatre, in its present building since 1952, is in its 147th season. The Batumi Art and Music Center has a hall of 1,100 seats and is home to the state symphony orchestra, a choir and a ballet troupe; an international festival of classical concerts ran from 21 to 24 April 2026. Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University has more than 9,000 students in seven faculties, which keeps the city young outside the season.
For sport, the Batumi Stadium, with 20,035 seats, opened in October 2020 and is home to Dinamo Batumi. The boulevard is the city's main place for running and cycling, and the crowd-sourced average for a gym membership is about GEL 149 a month.
Safety
We found no official crime rate for Batumi. The national statistics office publishes monthly counts of people prosecuted by region: in January 2026, for example, 263 in Adjara against 667 in Tbilisi. These are prosecutions started, not crimes reported, and Adjara's figures include the summer influx of visitors, so they cannot be read as a crime rate. Ask neighbours and the building manager about the street before you buy, and take the usual care with valuables in crowded summer spots.
Air quality
Batumi has two automatic monitoring stations run by the National Environmental Agency, in the central park and on Tbel Abuseridze Street. A 2026 study of their 2025 data found monthly average PM2.5 levels between 10.1 and 26.2 µg/m³ on Abuseridze Street, and days above Georgia's daily limit of 25 µg/m³ on 44 days there and 39 days in the park. The authors class Batumi as slightly polluted; by the World Health Organization's 2021 guideline of 5 µg/m³ as an annual average, the levels are several times higher, mostly from road traffic. Flats away from main roads and near parks fare better.
